Code of Conduct Overview

Students at LIOS/Bastyr University are expected to display the behavior within the University and their communities that is demanded of good citizens. Fundamental kinds of misconduct that may lead to suspension or dismissal include, but are not limited to:

  • Physical or verbal abuse, intimidation, or racial, sexual or any form of harassment or discrimination of another person or group of persons;
  • Deliberate or careless endangerment; tampering with safety alarms or equipment; violation of specific safety regulations; and failure to render reasonable cooperation in any emergency;
  • Obstruction or forcible disruption of regular School/University activities, including, but not limited to: teaching, administration, organized events and operation and maintenance of facilities;
  • Interference with the free speech and movement of academic community members;
  • Possession of firearms, explosives or other dangerous weapons;
  • Dishonesty, including provision of false information, forgery, alteration or misuse of documents, plagiarism and other academic cheating, impersonation, misrepresentation, or fraud;
  • Theft, abuse, or unauthorized use of personal or School/University property or conference center property; and
  • Use/abuse of illicit drugs and/or alcohol during program curriculum.

Penalties range from warnings to dismissal. In every instance, the nature of the offense and the student’s prior experiences and conduct at the School/University are taken into consideration. When an infraction is discovered and/or a student is accused of misconduct, the incident will be investigated by the program lead. The student will be provided an opportunity to be heard. The program lead will submit a written report and recommendation to the Dean of the School of Applied Behavioral Science, who will determine the action to be taken. For additional information, consult the Bastyr University Student Handbook.

Academic Honesty

Academic work is evaluated on the assumption and the expectation that the work presented is a student’s own, unless designated otherwise. Plagiarism is unacceptable and is considered academically dishonest. No student shall represent the words or ideas of another as one’s own in any academic exercise. No student shall expropriate words, phrases, or ideas of another without attribution. And no student shall offer the words, ideas, or arguments of another person as one’s own work without appropriate attribution by question, reference, or footnote. Faculty (and adjunct faculty in consultation with faculty) have discretion as to what penalty to impose, including reprimands, repeating the required course work, suspension, or dismissal. When academic dishonesty is suspected, faculty must submit a written report to the track lead and program lead. Students guilty of such acts are subject to disciplinary action. The student has the right to appeal to the director of academic administration. Refer to the Bastyr University Student Handbook for additional details concerning academic honesty.

Alcohol and Illegal Drugs

LIOS and Bastyr are committed to providing an environment for teaching and learning that is not impeded by the presence of illicit drugs or alcohol. The unlawful possession, use and distribution of illicit drugs and alcohol on School/University campuses or sites, or during School/University sponsored events or activities, are prohibited. Students who attend class under the influence of alcohol and/or illegal drugs may also be subject to discipline, dismissal and/or arrest and conviction. Possession and consumption of alcoholic beverages outside of curriculum at LIOS module sites is restricted by the rules and regulations of the sites. Violations and/or complaints should be made to the Program Lead or Dean of the School. Complaints will be investigated and responded to promptly and equitably. Additional information is available in the Bastyr University Student Handbook.

Intolerance

An act of intolerance is any attempt to injure, harm, malign, or harass a person because of race, religion, color, national origin, handicap, age, sex, or sexual orientation. Such behavior includes words, acts, or attempts that pose physical or psychological harm or threat of such harm to individuals, to groups, to the School/University, or to the community. Acts of intolerance are not acceptable. Complaints should be made to the program lead or dean of the School. Complaints will be investigated and responded to promptly and equitably. An individual found guilty of intolerance is subject to disciplinary action for violation of this policy. For additional descriptions of acts of intolerance, consult the Bastyr University Student Handbook.

Sexual Harassment

Students, faculty and staff have the right to be free from sex discrimination in the form of sexual harassment by any member of the School/University community. Sexual harassment is conduct that exploits power or authority in order to elicit sexual submission or to intimidate. Harassment can be identified in the behavior itself as well as in its effects. Sexual harassment includes a wide range of behaviors from the actual coercing of sexual relations to the unwelcome emphasizing of sexual identity. This definition will be interpreted and applied in accordance with accepted standards of mature behavior, academic freedom and freedom of expression. Sexual harassment will not be tolerated. Complaints should be made to the Program Lead or Dean of the School. Complaints will be investigated and responded to promptly and equitably. Formal procedures will be initiated only with a signed written complaint. An individual found guilty of sexual harassment is subject to disciplinary action for violation of this policy. See the Bastyr University Student Handbook for additional provisions concerning sexual harassment.
