Kathleen Murphy

Kathleen Murphy earned her doctorate in film and literature from the University of Washington. She has served on the faculty of Pennsylvania State University and University of Washington, where she founded a Cinema Studies program. She headed the Arts and Humanities Department in UW Continuing Education.

Dr. Murphy has experience as a mental health professional, at University of Washington Hospital and in private practice. She was also Executive Director of the Northwest Family Training Institute. Her extensive experience as publications editor includes “The Evaluation of Continuing Education for Professionals: A Systems Review,” published by UW Press.

In 1990, Dr. Murphy was appointed Writer-in-Residence at the Film Society of Lincoln Center in New York and Contributing Editor of “Film Comment” magazine. She has served on the selection committees of the Seattle International Film Festival and the New York Film Festival, and was Director, Education /Special Projects, and Director, Women in Cinema Film Festival at Cinema Seattle. Her writing on film, culture and psychology has been collected in numerous books and published in many journals, magazines and websites. She speaks about film at museums and conferences; and reviews film for print and web publications. She joined LIOS in 2002.
